How To Make Your Own Dog Food From Scratch

Dog Food: How to Make Your Own

If you are concerned about the fillers and additives that are going into your dog’s foods, here are some pretty simple methods for whipping up healthy alternatives for your dog. They take a minimum of ingredients and are not that hard to prepare.

Make sure that you follow the storage guidelines to keep them fresh but at least you will know what your dog is truly eating! Most supermarkets now sell freshly made dog food that you can buy in the dairy case – and it costs a fortune. Here is an economical way to do it yourself.

Why make dog food from scratch? Because you are eliminating all the possible allergens and additives that make up so many of the pet foods available today. I know several people who have switched their dogs to homemade pet foods and they have seen a remarkable decrease in skin conditions and also improvement in bone and joint health, overall endurance and exuberance.

There is no evidence to support that a raw diet is beneficial or recommended although I know from experience that many breeders highly recommend it for certain breed dogs. I prefer my dogs to have cooked food products, however, there are many views on the subject. Ultimately, you have to research it and decide on what diet is best for your individual pet and likewise, even in the same household, one dog may thrive on one diet and another do poorly.

The only down side is that you have to prepare it but most of the recipes are not that time consuming and are highly nutritious. BirkDale Pet Mix is recommended for certain dogs with extreme health issues and is easily prepared by combining water with the mix and meat.

Rule of thumb for dog food – they should be 1/3 protein (from meat, eggs or dairy products) and 2/3 grains and vegetables.

Your Basic Dog Food – Meat, Rice and Vegetables

INGREDIENTS

1 pound ground meat – antibiotic and hormone free if you like – can use beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, etc.
2 cups cooked brown rice
1 pound bag or equivalent pound of mixed vegetables (I favor carrots, celery, potatoes, sweet potatoes – I know people who use kale, broccoli, cauliflower)
1-2 pound of plain yogurt

DIRECTIONS

Brown the ground beef in a skillet if you desire, drain fat. Set that aside.
Steam vegetables in a vegetable steamer or steam in pan with a veggie steamer device until tender. Remove from steamer and allow to cool a bit.
Chop the vegetables to desired size by hand or add vegetables to a food processor and pulse until the vegetables are coarsely chopped.
Mix the chopped vegetables with the rice and ground meat.
Store refrigerated in a tightly sealed container.

Homemade Salmon Dog Food Recipe

Homemade Salmon Dog Food Recipe

Salmon Dog Food Recipe

Homemade dog food is all the rage these days – here is another variation in case your dog has allergies or needs to be on a fish-based dog food. It is easy and economical – and the best thing of all is that you KNOW exactly what ingredients they are eating since you make it yourself!

This is another of my son Jonathan’s recipes that he passed on to me and I am unsure of the source of it but added a few suggestions of my own. I don’t feed our malamutes salmon any longer but did for a number of years. With fish though, especially salmon, please keep in mind it has to be COOKED salmon, as it can be poisonous for dogs.

There are lots of ‘wild’ natural dog foods on the market currently and they are super pricey. This is a good alternative and without all the fillers and protein that are not necessarily digestible, it is definitely worth taking a look at.

I have heard that you can substitute mackerel for the salmon as well and did that when I was feeding our dogs salmon but again, would stress that it should be cooked or canned fish. I have talked to some breeders and mushers who are into the raw diet (BARF) but I have also heard many down sides to that type of diet. I could personally not stomach making it so decided against it from the beginning!

As in all things, talk to your vet, talk to breeders, and research, research to find out what best suits your lifestyle and your individual dog!

Salmon Dog Food Recipe

INGREDIENTS

1 can of salmon – 14-15 ounces (remove bones)
1 beaten egg (or if intolerant to eggs could use egg substitute)
3 tablespoons cornmeal – I prefer using the coarser kind
Canola oil or other oil – or use cooking spray
1 potato
1 carrot
1 stalk of celery

DIRECTIONS

Combine the salmon, egg or substitute and cornmeal – mix well.
Form this mixture into patties.
Coat them with a little more cornmeal.
Then fry in a tiny amount of canola oil until brown on both sides.
Chop potato, carrot and celery into chunks.
Boil potato, carrot and celery until soft but not mushy.
Chop the salmon patties into small bites and stir together with the chopped and boiled vegetables.
A spoonful of cottage cheese can be added for moisture if needed.

NOTE:
Feeding RAW salmon to dogs if never recommended. Canned salmon is okay
to use because it has been heavily cooked – just remember to remove the
bones! You can substitute fresh salmon (as from a fillet) but make sure
that it is cooked, then flaked, removing all bones.

Salmon Roll For Dogs? What’s Next California Rolls?

Okay – this sounds like a sushi roll for dogs – but I checked on the lactose percentage. It is not that high for cream cheese and lactose products are not bad for dogs! This is again my son Jonathan’s forwarded recipe to me although this one I know comes from the Three Dogs Bakery Cookbook! Try it and see how your Fido likes it!

INGREDIENTS

2 cups canned salmon
8 ounces low-fat cream cheese
1/4 teaspoon beef broth.
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley

INSTRUCTIONS

Drain and flake the salmon, removing any skin and bones.
Combine salmon, cream cheese and beef broth.
Chill for at least 1 hour.
Shape salmon mixture into a 2 x 8 inch log and roll in pecans and parsley.
Slice into 8 pieces and serve.
Store unused portion in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Making Homemade Dog Treats

You can make homemade dog treats just like you can make homemade dog food – and the benefit is that you will know exactly what is going into your pet’s treats and dog food. You can make sure that your dog is not consuming products that are filled with byproducts that are perhaps indigestible and allergen causing – and you can also not spend a fortune making these treats at home! It doesn’t hurt to try them at least once and decide if the time ratio to satisfaction ratio is equitable – both for pet owner and pet!

How To Make Homemade Kibble Dog Food

Homemade Dog Food

In the spirit of trying to provide our dogs with food these days that is healthy and without fillers and additives, try this meatless recipe for dog food. Making our own dog food seems to be one way to ensure what our dogs are ingesting and knowing that they are not being subjected to poor quality dog foodsor harmful chemicals. The added food dyes alone are staggering and you have to wonder why they are putting them in.

My son, Jonathan has made this recipe many times for his lab breeds and forwarded it on to me although I am unsure of the source for it. Vote on whether it was a hit with your dog or not.

What A Dog Needs

According to the articles I have read on dog foods, a good quality dog food should contain the following for dogs at different stages:

PUPPY

28% protein
17% fat

ADULT DOG

18% protein
9-15% fat

PERFORMANCE DOG

25% protein
20% fat

RACING/SLEDDING DOG

35% protein
50% fat

LACTATING/NURSING DOG

28% protein
17% fat.

However, remember that as in so many things in life, quantity is not as important as quality. The source of the protein is extremely important. They claim that 32% of poor quality protein found in dog foods could end up giving your dog too little protein, which seems a contradiction but that means that pet food companies can get away with adding low-quality protein products such as meat and bone meal by-products and corn gluten meal.  This will increase the percentage of protein (crude) that shows up on the label without making a decent food. Low quality proteins are hard to digest and therefore go right through the dog without being absorbed properly.  You may be paying for a dog food that your dog cannot metabolize

I have a large breed puppy – a malamute – and frankly have found Eukaneuba, Purina, Iams and the like lacking in the diet my puppy needs to build a strong body while claiming that they are perfect for large breed dogs. I had my now 7 or 8 year old malamute on Eukaneuba and found that she was not doing well on it at all. My malamute with Addison’s disease could not tolerate these so-called high quality dog foods and we ended up switching him to a diet of venison and potato and adding in such things as brown rice, beef or chicken homemade foods and broths.

Making your own dog food is not for everyone and it is not the ONLY way to feed any dog at any stage in life. However, do your homework and if you do feed your dog a commercial dog food, make sure that it is a high quality dog food and that you are not throwing your money (and your dog’s health) away on the wrong diet.
