What is an iPad-iPad for Dummies-How to use an iPad

What is an iPad?

I have seen all of the hype around Apple’s latest product, the iPad. I have watched in bemusement as hundreds if not thousands of people camp outside Apple stores for days on end to get their hand on one of these iPad’s. I have sat through countless hours of news bulletins; all singing the praises of this new gadget; the iPad.

What is an iPad?

In this article I am going to share with you what I have found out about this iPad thingy, I will not be reporting on the iPad as a technical genius, giving you the wonderful technological advances in all there glory, oh no that just isn’t me. Instead I am writing this information from the point of view of a technological dinosaur and if that’s you too then please read on.

It is my intention to see what all of the fuss is about and give you a good honest overview of what an iPad is, what it does and what it can do for you.

What does Apple say an iPad is?

Apple themselves describe the iPad as a revolutionary product that gives it’s user to best experience of using the web, email on the move, viewing photos , watching movies, reading books and listening to music.

An iPad has a design that is thin, light and very stylish with a 9.7 inch high resolution LED back-lit IPS display and incredibly Multi Touch capability, thin and light enough to take anywhere.

iPad has over 1000 apps (applications) already made for it in the App store with more being developed every day, if that isn’t enough iPad can also run nearly 200,000 apps developed for the iPhone.

What does the internet say an iPad is?

The iPad is a tablet computer designed and developed by Apple.

It is particularly marketed for consumption of media such as books and periodicals, movies, music, and games, and for general web and e-mail access.

At around 700 grams its size and weight are intermediate between most contemporary smartphones and laptop computers

What do I think an iPad is now?

By avoiding all of the jargon it seems to me that the Apple iPad is a cross between a laptop computer, phone modem, mp3 player, DVD player and book reader.

The iPad looks rather futuristic; with a clear screen that is large enough to provide an acceptable viewing experience. It is much smaller and lighter than a laptop; which from a practical point of view makes it easier to use when you are out and about but I would question whether I would be watching movies on it.

At this stage in my research I think the iPad is an expensive luxury toy or status symbol for people easily parted with their money. However let’s not right it off too soon as millions of people obviously love it, maybe my further investigation will throw up a point I am clearly missing.

I can certainly appreciate the benefit of carrying one gadget rather than 4 or 5.

What does Apple say an iPad can do?

Safari

iPad is the best way to experience the web. View whole pages in portrait or landscape on the large Multi-Touch screen. And let your fingers do the surfing.

Mail

There’s nothing like the Mail app on iPad. With a split-screen view and expansive on-screen keyboard, it lets you see and touch your email in ways you never could before.

Photos

A vivid LED-backlit IPS display makes viewing photos on iPad extraordinary. Open albums with a tap. Flip through your pictures one by one. Or play a slideshow and share your photos.

Video

The 9.7-inch high-resolution screen makes iPad perfect for watching HD films, TV programmes, podcasts, music videos and more.

YouTube

With the YouTube app designed specifically for iPad, videos are even easier to find. And on the amazing iPad display, they’re more fun to watch. Especially in HD

See more of your music.

The big, beautiful iPad display lets you browse your music collection by song, artist, album, genre or composer with the touch of a finger. See your music as full-size album art. Flip through all your albums and tap to choose what you want to hear. It’s as natural as flipping through CDs.

Get Genius recommendations.

iPad comes with a musical Genius that automatically creates multiple mixes based on the music you love. Once you’ve added music to your iTunes library, you can put Genius to work while you’re listening. Say iPad is playing a song you really like and you want to hear other tracks like it. Tap Genius. It finds other songs on your iPad that sound great together and makes a Genius playlist for you. Count on Genius to create a mix you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.

Feed your iPad.

It’s easy to fill your iPad with music. Tap iTunes to browse millions of songs in the iTunes Store and download new music directly to your iPad. When you connect iPad to your Mac or PC, the songs you downloaded on the go can sync to the iTunes library on your computer. It works the other way around, too. Everything from iTunes on your computer can sync to iPad. iTunes also syncs your playlists, including On-the-Go playlists, Genius playlists and Genius Mixes. So no song is left behind.

Millions of songs, thousands of films and TV programmes and so much more. Browsing and buying are just a tap away.

App Store

You’ll find almost 200,000 apps on the App Store and iPad can run almost all of them. Including everything from games to productivity apps.

iBook

Reading is a joy on iPad. Text looks crisp and bright. Pages turn with a flick. And you can buy new books from the iBookstore. Just download the free iBooks app to get started.

Maps

See more of the world with iPad. Find locations easier than ever with street view, satellite view or new terrain view — all using Google services.

Notes

With its large display and on-screen keyboard, iPad makes it easy to jot down quick notes and keep important information on hand. You can even email yourself reminders.

iWork

The iWork productivity applications that you know and love on the Mac — Keynote, Pages and Numbers — have been completely redesigned for iPad. So you can create great-looking presentations, documents and spreadsheets. All using just your fingers. And while they’re easy to use, they’re also the most powerful productivity apps ever built for a mobile device.

And the list goes on and on. Clearly the iPad is crammed with useful features and applications.

What does the internet say an iPad can do?

Hardly surprising the Internet techies have given the iPad rave reviews.

They have discussed each and every feature to infinity and beyond and everything in between, they love the style, applications, movies, music, wi-fi Internet, book reader, organiser, work applications, 1000’s of applications and so on…..

In a nutshell the internet people in the know have been suprised that the iPad isn’t just an oversized iPod touch.

It is in fact a very useful entertainment, business, academic, communication tool and does exactly what is say’s on the box.

What do I think an iPad can do?

It is difficult to dispute that the iPad is quite an impressive machine.

During this research i am beginning to understand how most if not all of these features have their uses.

It is also becoming apparent that the iPad has been designed to be all things to all men(women) and seems to have achieved it.

It is unlikely that every feature or app would be used but without question that is the point I have been missing thus far, the iPad is customisable, you decide what you want it to be then go out and create it until it becomes part of you.

Apple have spent hundreds of $millions if not $billions in the development of the i range.

As we and our needs develop so will the iPad, it is designed to be a platform for the future; a future that is Apple.

After the initial scepticism prior to the iPads launch they are hailing it as the saviour, that’s the saviour of technology, design and mobile entertainment.

Of course there are defectors; there always is. Some people simply can’t be pleased but the overall informed opinion is that Apple has stolen the lead on any other multi functional gadget on the market today and for the foreseeable future.

What do I think an iPad can do for me?

At the start of this article my answer to this question was a definate “nothing”, now I am not so confident.

i do not fully understand all of the features, I probably don’t need too but what I can start to understand and appreciate is that being the proud owner of an iPad would make my daily life less cluttered, more organised and much more entertaining.

I guess the final question should be; will I buy one?

And my answer:

I can’t think of a reason why I shouldn’t !

Using an iPad to Take Notes in Class

Using an iPad to Take Notes in Class
See all 3 photos
iPad with a Smart Cover and an Apple wireless keyboard.

Introduction

Heading off to college soon? Already in college and looking for a way to get rid of some of that paper and those notebooks? Or are you already done with college and looking for an easier way to take minutes at a meeting? No matter your situation, the iPad may be able to make your life a little easier.

Being a college student with an iPad, I can vouch for their versatility and their usefulness (I use an iPad 2 with a Smart Cover and a wireless keyboard). It is a very light and portable device and can also store ALL of your notes and papers, without having to worry about carrying around notebooks and binders. Although you may be skeptical about how easy it is to actually type on it, I can assure you that it is not as complicated as you think. In addition, you can use the “Notes” app already installed on your device or you can obtain a separate word processing app (I use Apple’s “Pages”).

Portability

One of the defining features of the iPad is its size. It is extremely thin and light, and takes up only about as much space as a magazine would. If you place it in a book bag or a small computer bag you can barely tell that it is even there.

Now, I believe that there is more to portability than just size and weight; how about how quickly it can be ready to use? Putting your iPad into sleep mode and waking it up is almost instantaneous. You’ll have your iPad out and ready to go before anyone else even has their laptops plugged in. Also, with the iPad’s long battery life you should have plenty of time to take all of your notes and then come home and charge it (although I only have to charge my iPad once every four or five days, at the most).

Storage

Another great aspect of the iPad is its storage capabilities. Every few pages of notes should only take up a few kilobytes (Kbs), let’s say 10Kbs-20Kbs. Now let’s say that you have a 16 Gigabyte iPad, that is ruffly 17 million kilobytes (another way to look at it is between 850,000 papers and 1,700,000 papers). I can guarantee you that all of your documents will fit comfortably in to your tablet.

Writing With the On-Screen Keyboard

When I first got my iPad, I thought that trying to type on it would have much the same results as typing on my iPod (which I find a quite difficult compared to using a physical keyboard). But I was surprised to find the typing on the on-screen keyboard felt more like typing on a computer keyboard than on an iPod. It is has large keys, giving you plenty of room to type, with a layout that feels a lot like a computer when you use it. Mind you, it’s not quite as easy as a physical keyboard, but it still very convenient and effective.

See all 3 photos
The Apple wireless keyboard (side view).

Using a Separate Physical Keyboard

Like I mentioned earlier, I use an Apple wireless keyboard and a Smart Cover in conjunction with my iPad; this makes writing on my iPad even preferable to typing on my computer. The controls on the iPad are smooth and convenient, and I don’t have to worry about waiting for Windows to load before I can begin typing.

Although there are many docks and Bluetooth keyboards available for the iPad, I use Apple’s Bluetooth keyboard. It is small and extremely light, and with it being only slightly longer than my iPad it fits comfortably in my computer case. Connecting it is also very simple, I let the keyboard and iPad find each other when I first bought the keyboard and they have remained connected ever since.

Notes and Pages

“Notes” is a great way to take notes (no pun intended?) with the iPad. It is a simple yet versatile program that allows for you to keep your work organized in a small list and to take down anything you would normally put on paper. you even get the ability to send anything you have typed directly to your email. However, if you want a little more functionality you may want to think about purchasing a third part word processor or Apple’s “Pages”.

I bought “Pages” for my iPad and have not regretted it since (about $10 on the App Store). I’ve used it to write all of my class papers and it is on hand if I need it to take notes in class. Pages allows me to edit both Pages documents and Word documents, so I don’t have to worry about file type. What’s even better though is that it allows me to export as either file type as well, and I can send these right to my email. Pages is fun to easy and easy to pick up on. The controls seem to be logically placed on the screen and the touch capabilities make it all the more interactive.

See all 3 photos
A screenshot of “Pages” at work.

Conclusion

The iPad is an extremely versatile tool, and can be highly beneficial to students and others who are required to take notes on a regular basis. It is small and portable, capable of storing all of your notes and papers, and is a breeze to type on. Apple and other companies have even made it easier to take notes by adding apps that cater to the paper-writing/note-taking users. I would recommend the iPad, or a tablet in general, to anyone who would ask me about it.

iMovie

Unlike many smartphone manufacturers, Apple often takes the role of the creator of the most popular applications for their devices. Familiar to all owners of the Mac, iMovie, designed for video editing, with the release of the fourth generation Apple smartphone was announced, including mobile devices – iPhone and iPad. Despite the fact that iMovie came much later in the AppStore, and was not free, it instantly became one of the most popular applications in the iPhone and iPad – is largely due to the ease of use.

iMovie is endowed with only the most necessary functions of video editing. For visuals you can add photos, music (but no more than one track to the clip), subtitles. No color correction capabilities, add effects, and can not manually change the white balance . When creating your video project in 9 available themes, most of them are unlikely to be used on a regular basis.Quite a useful function – recording and adding video segments to create video clips, directly from the application interface.

In addition to creating and editing videos iMovie allows trailers in 11 subjects with tips on plans, content and duration of the video segments.

Splice – Video Editor

One of the most popular alternatives to corporate iMovie – application Splice, which, oddly enough, at a lower cost in the AppStore offers greater control for video editing on the iPhone. For those who are in the “pocket” installation you want to work with several audio tracks, more options for adding audio effects, subtitles and captions.

Splice allows you to create movies from already captured and stored on your phone, video, photos, music and text. All of this can be provided with multiple effects – both audio and video – add transitions, voice, crop to length or mount only the necessary pieces. During assembly of the clip from the individual segments of the video, you can add effects to slow or speed up shooting. On the ability to save and publish video Splice is no different from iMovie, and other similar programs – you can fill in for the movie and alternative video hosting YouTube, or save it to the memory of your gadget.

Viddy

After the success of Instagram many developers introduced the idea to create an analog video – services, which would be just as easy and convenient to record videos, handle them “one-touch” and instantly share them with friends. So there was Viddy for iOS – social application for treatment and disposal of short videos, the interface is almost exactly copies Instagram.

The main rule: the length of the video should not exceed 15 seconds. This length is useful for sharing – download file is inexpensive mobile traffic. The choices are already stored in your phone memory or remove the clip immediately before posting it on the Internet. After the publication of the video, you can choose any convenient way to share it with your friends: via SMS, e-mail, Twitter or Facebook. To see your video, your friends need not to install the application or be the owner of the smartphone iOS or Android, public viewing of the clips will be available at the link on the web version of the service

Cinema FX

Sometimes successfully captured video lacks only effects, but for the sake of this, many are lazy to upload videos to the computer to continue working with them in the video editor. A brand iMovie from Apple, as we have noted, there is not much room for creativity in creating effects. Here we are and it is useful to use a very simple application CinemaFX, which will diversify the video.

Generally CinemaFX – is photo editing application, but there is also a separate program for processing video sequences – CinemaFX for Video. The developers decided not to solve all the problems one program installation and handling, and gave it a capacity to create color effects. Many are available free of charge, some have a little extra. Upon completion of processing of video you can store it in HD-resolution and continue editing the already of specialized programs – for example, in the same or iMovie or Splice.
