The Jack-a-lope

I can never understand why people doubt things that they have never seen and do not listen to those who have seen whatever they are talking about. I have never seen a an albino buffalo but I hear that one was born not long ago and I have no reason to doubt that.

For those not familiar with the name, a Jack-a-lope is a very large rabbit with antlers like you would see on an antelope. Now, I have never seen one myself but my cousin, Ralph, has and told me all about it.

He had gone hunting for antelope but when he saw this thing he thought it was at least food for the table so he shot it and took it home for dinner. He said it actually was pretty good but he never saved any of it for the rest of us so we all doubted his story and told him he was full of beans, so he decided to have the little critter stuffed and mounted so that he could show us that Jack-a-lope.

Once he had it mounted though, he decided that he had the makings of a nice pair of book ends if he could get another one so he took the Jack-a-lope and the board he had it mounted on out to the woods again and put it back in the same spot where he shot the first one in hopes that he would see another one. I recon he sat there a week waiting to see if he could attract another Jack-a-lope so that he could have his book ends but never did see anything so he used an old Jack Daniels bottle for the other book end. We all told him that he must have shot the only one of those left and that he had caused another animal to go extinct but he never let that bother him. He had that thing holding up his books for several years until the day he died but that is another story.

He had gone back into the woods again searching for another Jack-a lope and got himself bit by a ratt-lurtle and died shortly thereafter but like I say, that is another story in itself.
